What is Webhosting
A webhosting service allocates a space on one of their servers connected to the internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This allow them to showcase your website on the internet. The servers used to host your website have extremely large hard drives, or make use of an array of hard drives (the server “joins” more than one hard drive, making them appear as one for redundancy and effieciency purposes.) The space on these servers is then rented to whoever wants to have a presence on the internet.
Each and every server that is connected to the internet has to have a unique address so that it may be located easily. This address is called the IP address, and consists of 4 numerical sets of numbers separated by periods i.e. 196.154.48.54.
There are countless different types of webhosting. Most of them are related to users certain capabilities. Some examples are scripts that allow built in forms, forums, interactive functions. For commercial purposes many hosts include business tools like, point of sales packages and in house credit card processing.
The prices for these different web hosts vary from webhost to webhost. Some even their hosting for free, however place a lot of advertising on your website. Others can charge thousands of dollars per month for a dedicated and managed server. But most people opt for a shared server, as this is one of the most value for money webhosting packages that you can get.
One of the main disadvantages of free web hosting is the advertising. It is completely up to the web hosts discretion where these ads will appear, what type of ads will appear, and how many are placed on your website. You have very little say about the type of ads you want to appear on your website, and often they are not very tasteful. The ads also effect load times of your site, and the ads are often set to load before any of your website has been loaded making it highly likely that the person to your website will click on one of the ads, or rather click back never seeing your website.
When looking for a web host there are other aspects to look at other than price. Many hosts put restriction on what type of content you can host with them, what scripting languages and functions are supported. Make sure that you do your homework, read their terms and conditions before signing up to anything. Make sure that you will be able to transfer your website and your domain easily, if thinks go sour down the line. People often get blind sighted by price alone, and end up with so many headaches down the line. Don’t fall into this trap.
