What Is Fantastico
To allow applications to be available for use on your web server, they first have to be installed. Fantastico is an example of many commercial script libraries available on the net which automates these installations, making them simple and easy to setup even for inexperienced web server admins. Fantastico itself is made available through the cPanel web site control panel, and as a result is only available on web servers which offer this feature.
Various applications are available to install using Fantastico. The most common uses of these applications are web content management systems, blogs, photo-sharing and shopping carts. There are multiple ways in which to install these applications on your web server, most of them can be installed using a command-line interface, similar to that of DOS. There are also numerous add-on scripts available for cPanel which will help with the application installation process. Both of these methods however have certain limitations, as the installation of the application software is typically all that these methods can accomplish.
Admins who install applications using Fantastico generally have a lot more control. Those web server admins who do choose to install the apps with Fantastico will have a complete overview of what apps have been installed on a server. The administrator is also able to set permission levels for users through Fantastico, meaning a user may or may not be able to perform his own installations, depending on how this has been set up. One of the great features of Fantastico is that an admin can have it configured to be informed when any installation or removal has been made.
There are however issues of which an admin intending to use Fantastico should be made aware of. If installation scripts are not kept up-to-date, then the application software which is being installed may not be the most current version available. As a result, this can cause instability in the applications or may pose a security risk. It can be difficult to upgrade or patch apps which have been installed with Fantastico, however the benefits of doing so outweigh these issues.
