Generating links is one of the most important things in getting your site known, if people are linking to your site it's because they find it interesting and know other people may feel the same way. Effectively it is the online version of word-of-mouth, and it is one of the best marketing tools you have at your disposal.

But instead of asking yourself, how do I get links? You need to ask yourself, why would people want to link to my website? Would you link to your website? Obviously if you answered no to the last question, no one is going to link to your site, unless they were merely looking for a reciprocal link.

So what can you do to get links? You need to change your mindset. Your site isn't going to succeed by infinitely tweaking your SEO, or having killer Adwords campaigns, yes, they will increase traffic to your website, but they are not going to keep your visitors there. Content as we've discussed reigns supreme and it is your number one tool in getting links. Unless you are offering some revolutionary new service, you are not going to get links without content.

People often refer to this type of content as "link-baiting" and "viral marketing", regardless of the buzz word, it's plain and simple, it's interesting content. Please don't make the same mistake as countless people have, by simply regurgitating something they have found on the web. Google has indexed over 1 trillion web pages, what do you think the chances are writing something you may think is very original? Pretty slim, now think what are the chances of your rehashed content being perceived as "original"? Exactly, zilch, and that is exactly the amount of links you will get. If you writing content that you find uninteresting, you have to somehow find it interesting, research the topic, become fully aware of it. Otherwise you may as well stop there. If the article isn't interesting to you, there is going to be no benefit in uploading it your website.

Once you have created a website, that you yourself find interesting, you are on the right track. In one perspective humans all seem very unique, but the more we think about the more similar we really are and you are bound to find countless others with the same interests. You may now start searching ways for getting links to your site.

The best links are the free ones. By this I mean, links to your site with no strings attached. The unsolicited links, Google and top search engines count these as "votes" to your website. There is not really much you can do in this regard, except what we've discussed above.

What you can do now that you created a content rich site, is ask other web masters of similar websites if they would like to exchange links. Obviously you can send out thousands of emails with some spam list, and a generic, "Hi, I found your site interesting...". You don't want to link with every person on the street. Research the site you want to link, criticize it as much as you would you own site. You wouldn't recommend a really bad book now would you? Of course not, your reputation would be out the window. It's works exactly the same as the online world.
