Review of DimDim Conferencing Software
If you work in a corporate environment that is fond of lengthy meetings, or especially in the web industry were long-distance collaboration is a must, unless you’ve been living in a cave you have no doubt heard about “webinars. These are web-based meetings which usually involve brainstorming on a whiteboard, presentations, editing collaboratively to live desktop sharing.
Most companies compete mainly for the larger corporate market, however DimDim provides it services for free. They offer web conferencing for groups of up to 20 people. They not only offer free online sign ups of these service, but have freely given away their open source hosting platform so you can take complete control of the system on your own server. What’s nice about DimDim, is that it only requires a username, email address and password to get started. The people you invite to join in your webinar only need to click on the link that is sent out automatically to them.
Anyone participating only requires a stable internet connection and be using either one of the following browsers, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera. Screencasting of the desktop is usually done by a separate freeware program.
Conference calling now a days referred to as the old school style of tele-conferencing is also available with DimDim. Each user gets a unique key, which they can use to initiate a conference call.
DimDim can be setup in a host of different ways for conferencing. Depending on your users connections you can go for audio & video, audio only, or none of the above if you merely want to use text. Another nice feature is that you can rotate the microphone amongst three other members in the conference, and choose whether they can see each other or not. One of the best features, for me in any case is the ability to set a time limit on the meeting, and this shows a nice countdown in the top right corner, great for helping everyone stay more focused.
