  • Visitors are important
A highly common mistake is putting in too much effort trying to lure the search engine spiders to your site and not doing enough to keep your visitors satisfied. The search engines exists because of the visitors, you need to identify your target audience and ensure you keep them engaged enough to return again. Running a blog with interesting posts or writing articles to keep them interested and informed is one way of going about this. Keep in mind no web surfer likes looking at an ugly site or one that they don't even know how to navigate around.

  • Design your Site with Keywords in mind
An important aspect of SEO is keywords and correctly phased keywords can have a huge impact on the ranking process. Design your site with focussed keywords which are relative to your target audience, if they aren't appealing to your visitors you may find yourself losing them one by one as the internet is large and there's always another site with the content they're looking for.

  • Think like a Spider
Crawlers are bots, or software, created to crawl through your site and index your pages based on relevancy to what the user types into the search engine. These bots cannnot interpret javascript, flash or images. Keep your site simple in terms of HTML coding and be sure to add alt tags to all your images.

  • Exchanging links
A vital element of SEO is link exchanging, this means that you have your websites URL displayed on other websites than your own. Trading links with people who have similar content on their site without running the risk of competing for visitors. The more links that crawlers can find linking back to your site, the more important the crawler assumes your site to be. Be careful though, linking to sites with a bad rating or even worse, malicious software, can have a negative effect on your site if you associate yourself with them by linking to their site.

  • Don't rely Solely on Ranking
Just because you're not number 1 on Google for 'Harley Davidson' does not mean that your site can't be successful or profitable. If you can maintain a quality audience then that's just as good as being at number 1 on a search engine which offers no guarantees. Ranking is extremely ambiguous and no one knows exactly what algorithm these crawlers use to rank websites, just remember to keep your visitors involved or intrigued.
